Groups
Overview
Google Groups is a collaboration tool that can be used to host email lists, web forums, and even Q&A forums. At St. John’s School, Groups primarily provides faculty and staff with a way of emailing multiple recipients at the same time using a single email address. Groups have a number of advanced features, including:
- Permissions management, determining who can post to a list (i.e., for announcement lists)
- List archiving and digests
Can’t I do this with mailing lists in Gmail?
You can to a degree -- but mailing lists in Gmail can’t be used by multiple people at the school. Also, mailing lists only support a limited number of recipients. A Gmail account can email a maximum of 500 people a day.

You can create a new group by clicking on the Create Group button. Please pay attention to the group settings as you create it, specifically the “Group type” and “Basic permissions.” It is possible to create Groups that are shared with the internet, rather than being restricted to the school.
